The Incredible Hulk #340 Homage Covers
The Incredible Hulk #340 (February 1988)
Cover Artists: Todd McFarlane & Bob Wiacek
Penciller: Todd McFarlane
Inker: Todd McFarlane
The Hulk and Wolverine first meet and do battle in The Incredible Hulk #181, which features Wolverine’s first full appearance. Many issues later, in #340, the Hulk and Wolverine meet again, but it is not a friendly meeting, and another battle ensues.
The Incredible Hulk #340 features a cover by Todd McFarlane which has since become iconic in the industry. (McFarlane, in fact, has produced some of the most memorable and oft-imitated or homaged comic book covers of the modern era.) The dominant element of McFarlane’s iconic cover is the mirror-like reflection of the Hulk in the Wolverine’s polished claws. This trope has inspired many artists since, and the result is a variety of reflections in chrome and polished objects, including the Silver Surfer’s cosmic-powered surfboard.
McFarlane’s reflection motif continues to be popular and inspires artists many decades after its publication.
