Purple Rain (1984)
Purple Rain, a quasi-biographical rock drama musical starring Prince, an American recording artist, was produced to showcase Prince’s talents. The 1984 film won an Oscar for Best Original Song Score, and was the last film to win the award. The album also received a Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. “Purple Rain,” the best-selling title track from the soundtrack album, is one of Prince’s signature songs. Other singles from the album, “When Doves Cry” and “Let’s Go Crazy,” were worldwide hits as well. The soundtrack spent 122 weeks — more than two years! — on the Billboard 200. According to Business Insider, the Purple Rain soundtrack is the third best-selling soundtrack of all time, besting Grease, Titanic, Forrest Gump and Dirty Dancing. The Oscar-winning film grossed more than $68 million at the box office in the United States and over $80 million worldwide, on a budget of only $7.2 million.
