David Nakayama’s Cereal Box Cosplay Homages
Cereal Box “Cosplay” Covers by David Nakayama
Twenty-twenty and 2021 have been particularly banner years for comics which homage magazine covers. Homages of other pop culture subjects, such as cereal boxes, have likewise been favorites for collectors. These types of covers are sometimes called “cosplay” as the comic characters pretend to be characters found in other mediums, i.e. cereal box characters or characters who might appear in real-life magazines.
David Nakayama, like Paul Green, has produced beautiful cereal box cosplay covers. At this writing, Nakayama has provided cereal box covers for popular characters which appear in comics published by Marvel & DC, i.e. Venom, Carnage, Batgirl, Mr. Freeze & Harley Quinn, to name only a few.
(To be edited) Nakayama was born in Hawaii and began his career in the comic industry when his first published work appeared in Star Wars Tales #17. Early in his career, he won Wizard Magazine’s “Be The Next Top Cow Superstar” contest and relocated to Los Angeles, California where he went to work for Top Cow Productions under the tutelage of Marc Silvestri. Since then, Nakayama has gone on to work for many different publishers and has been a part of series such as Marvel Adventures: Hulk, Marvel Adventures: Spider-Man, Daredevil, Venom, Spider-Gwen, X-Men, Ghost Rider, Black Panther, Poison Ivy, Red Sonja and Grimm Fairy Tales.
