Unusual & Unexpected Zenescope Cosplay Variants

While DC Comics experimented with the viability (i.e. profitability) of variant covers across its major titles from 2013-2017, Zenescope has taken variants to a whole new level, particularly in the name of cosplay.

For years, Zenescope has produced multiple variants across all its titles from a stable of artists, many of whom specialize in the sensious depiction of female characters, such as Elias Chatzoudis, John Royle, Jamie Tyndall, and many others. A number of Zenescope’s variants are cosplay – in which Zenescope’s characters (heroines, villains and anti-heroes) “dress up” as characters from other mainstream pop culture properties, such as Star Wars, Marvel Comics, DC Comics and popular characters from film & television, i.e. Scooby-Doo, The Jetzons, The Flintstones, The Wizard of Oz, & etc. In late 2021 or early 2022, Zenescope also began to publish variants which cosplay board game properties, such as Battleship, Sorry, Monopoly and others.

Many of the cosplay covers produced by Zenescope are published as variants for their premium subscriptions, such as Zenbox. and for special events such as large comic conventions such as New York (NYCC), San Diego (SDCC) or one of the many Wizard World conventions in Philadelphia, Chicago, Anaheim, Austin or New Orleans. If a collector wants one of these books, these are the cons to watch in the news.

Zenescope publishes two variants – a standard variant and a Z-rated variant – for many of these subscription services and events. Both are limited printings. While the variants share the same cosplay character and scene, the Z-rated variant as one might expect is the pricier variant but the character is dressed in shorter, more revealing clothing with exposed breasts, i.e. topless. These partially nude Z-rated variants, sometimes called Showcase variants as well, are printed in very limited runs of 100 copies. Thus their considerably heftier price tag. Especially in the secondary market, where they are soon very scarce.

The variants below cosplay American staples for lunch and dinner. The fast food restaurant. Untold millions in America, Canada and other nations around the world visit these franchises daily due to time and other constraints. Burger King. Kentucky Fried Chicken. McDonald’s. Wendy’s. The brands and products are as familiar as any pop culture character. Everyone has to eat, after all!
