As with his other work, Parrillo balances a vivid array of colors against highlights and shadows to capture a dramatic scene with a keen sense of depth through masterful use of scale, foreground and background. His subject – in this case Vampirella – is frequently poised to engage an opponent – typically male – or as she exits the engagement victorious, her opponent dispatched and his blood staining the earth or snow, perhaps his head held aloft. Parrillo’s covers are rarely static, flat or one-dimensional.
