Another Gimmick That’s Sure to Please

If you like glowing, phantasmagoric black light effects, that is.

And limited edition variants.

Printed black light collectibles have been available since the 1960s (or earlier?).

Kung Fu poster….

Black light variants come in two flavors: traditional black light and “ultraviolet.” Both respond to a black light, or ultraviolet light. In particular, lighter colors – particularly white – become brighter or seem to glow in the presence of ultraviolet light, creating interesting effects. Black lights have been popular to create creepy, glowing effects in the average haunted houses which spring up at Halloween.

Traditional black light variants are printed with what appear to be inks of standard colors. For example, Dawn #1 from July 1994 (shown below in standard light and beneath a black light) appears to be printed in traditional inks. Little about the comic appears odd under standard light. Nothing glows.

Circa 2021, some publishers – such as Dynamite – began to label covers printed in brilliant colors which change in the presence of a black light, or an ultraviolet lamp, as “ultraviolet” variants. These ultraviolet variants are similar to original black light variants in that they respond to the black light spectrum, but they are printed with highly unusual colors, such as blue hair and green skin, or vice versa. For example, see Batman: Three Jokers #1 (Fabok Green Incentive), King in Black #1 (McKone Black Light Variant) and any of the Immortal Red Sonja ultraviolet variants shown below. Other black light variants – such as Clayton Crain’s black light variants for Marvel Comics – likewise use a similar spectrum of greens, blues and purples, with splashes of yellow, pink and red, to create dynamic effects in the presence of an ultraviolet light, or black light.

Some of the comics below are shown in traditional light and, when an image is available, under the influence of a black light.

We hope you enjoy the awesome effects created by ultraviolet light with these variants.

And if you have any of the variants below, take a clear, sharp photo of them under a black light and send the full-size photos to us, so we can share them with other like-minded and interested collectors!
